October 2015 Newsletter

NewLogoHi /all,

Well here it is Sunday and still beautiful, the rain has moved on and the sky is clear, what a great day to be alive, looking out the window I see a covey official under the apple tree along with doves and assorted birds.

Moving on, it seem that the Chinook are on the run and the coho are starting up the rivers, everyone on Facebook is catching big salmon and having a ball. I hope you are getting your
share.

Now is the time for all good members to come to the aid of their Chapter, our next meeting is on the 20th of October and we are having Pro fisherman and guide Kelly Short as our speaker, if you remember his last visit he filleted a giant salmon to the amazement of most of the audience and made it look so easy. Now he is back and he will have a lot of good things to teach us so we can go out and catch the big ones, we will also be raffling off two seats in Kelly’s boat, you don’t want to miss this chance to fish with one of the greats.

We will have refreshments and our normal door prizes and remember it is time for the big raffle tickets for the Alaska Trip and the Drift Boat, tickets will be on sale at the meeting, please bring a friend we want to have a good showing for Kelly.

I would also like to mention that the Hall of Fame banquet is coming up on November 14th and this year will be held in Wilsonville at the Holiday Inn, this usually starts around 4:00pm, dinner is at 6:00pm so come early and look around there are silent auctions of all kinds of things and then the big open auctions after dinner for all the fantastic trips and such that have been donated. We will be purchasing a table for 10 the cost to you is $25.00 the Chapter is picking up $30.00 for each seat, but we need to know now, so bring your answer to the meeting and let us know, checks or cash accepted and must be paid to Linda so the money can be accounted for.

Well keep your line tight and your powder dry. Brian

September 2015 Newsletter

NewLogoHi All!

Well here we are in September and  time for the start of our general meetings.

First I would like to say that summer was hot and the water was low, there were more Chinook caught in my river than Steelhead, the run was very small this year and I don’t think that the sea lions did us any favors either, hopefully the rain will start soon and the coho will enter the river, we can always hope.

Next let me apologize for the lateness of this Newsletter, I have had so much going on at the house that it just slipped my mind, and now it is too late to mail the letter so I will ask all of you that receive this by email to please call and remind your friends that the first meeting is on the 15th of Sept. We are having a how to with some of our best and brightest members, to give you some pointers and answer questions. I hope to see you there.

It is raffle ticket time so please bring some extra money ( if there is such a thing ) so we can get this year of sales off to a good start.

The SHOT tournament is coming up and since we already have one boat in the tourney we are allowed a second boat free, so if you have a boat and two friends that want to compete for the glory and the prizes let Bob Lusk or myself know before the 15th so we can get you registered or you can do it yourself, thanks.

As always there will be refreshments and door prizes at the meeting, so tell your friends and bring your fish stories, see you on Tuesday.

Keep your line tight and your powder dry.  Brian

July 2015 Newsletter

Hi all !
I hope you are all staying cool and maybe even catching some fish.
I recently took a trip to the Deschutes River for some R&R and fishing, unfortunately the fishing was nil and the weather was 105 degrees, the water was about 73 and the fish were dying from the heat, even the warm water fish were not biting. Any way a lesson learned.
Just a reminder that the Chapter Picnic is on the 25th at North Santiam State Park and should begin about 11:00am, we will have the main course of hamburgers and hotdogs with all the trimmings and hopefully a big variety of potluck dishes from the attendees. if you are bring your kids or grand kids I will be bringing our fishing game. bring your poles if you want to try for the elusive Steelhead or Salmon that are lurking in our waters, all in all it should be a fun time with good friends.
Hope to see you all there.     Brian

June 2015 Newsletter

NewLogoHi All!

Well here it is June already and the weather is HOT but the fishing is hotter. I mean to say that there have been more Chinook caught in the North Santiam than Steelhead, I even caught one myself (nice fish). Hopefully the steelhead will start coming up the river soon, don’t stop trying.

Our next meeting (June 16th) will feature Dave Carpenter, fly fisherman extraordinaire, Dave is a pro guide for Orvis and is the owner of Outdoor Excursions and is also the owner of Riverview Flies, I am sure that you will get a lot of good pointers from this guest.

This will be the last general meeting until September, but I will try to keep you informed on what is happening in the river.

Our Chapter picnic will be held on the 25th of July and there will be a sign up sheet at the meeting, we have to have a head count so we can get the proper amount of food to feed everyone, and don’t forget to bring a potluck dish. Please remember that this picnic is for you the members of the chapter and your families, we need all the support we can get to make this a success. We will have a fishing game for the kids so please don’t leave them at home.

Our meeting is held at the Keizer City Hall 930 Chemawa Rd. We start at 7:00 there will be refreshments and door prizes, please feel free to bring a friend.

The last learn the river trip from Mehama to Stayton was OK except that there is rocks and low water at the bottom of the slide. Remember that the Stayton boat ramp will be closed from June 12th until it opens again in August (I think that’s right) anyway be careful out there.

Well hope to see you at the meeting. Keep your line tight and your powder dry. Brian

May 2015 Newsletter

Hi All!

And a very good morning to fall of you. I am looking out my window and seeing blue sky, sunshine and birds all over the yard. The river looks great at this time, the water level is low but the fish are still moving, I just heard of 3 Chinook caught so far this week and some steelhead, so it looks like some of them are getting past the sea lions at Willamette Falls, all reports indicate that about 3000 fish have been stopped by 30 some sea lions, anyone have a good recipe for sea lion?

Let me take some time to thank all the volunteers that showed up at the Park for the clean-up, who knew there wouldn’t be anything to do, the parks people have been hitting it hard and the park looks fabulous. So we had a great lunch and went home.

Another shout out to the volunteers that helped with the fly fishing clinic, what a great clinic there were some very talented people there. A special thanks to member and Pro Guide Dave Carpenter for his assistance and instruction you are greatly appreciated, and we are looking forward to you speaking at our general meeting in June.

As for this month our speaker is Wayne Parker from Good Day Fishing.  Wayne will be showing us some new products that are in his store and giving us some good advise on fishing, so come one come all to the greatest show of all. We are hoping to see you all there.

Minto Park clean-up is on the 23rd of this month so please sign up to help.

Free Fishing Days are the weekend of June the6th and 7th we will be helping to clean fish and help the kids catch fish at the Roaring River hatchery, and we need volunteers for that it really is a lot of fun seeing these kids catch fish that are almost as big as they are, some want to take them home for pets.

Youth Outdoor Day is on the 30th of this month, there is still time to volunteer if you want to help, it is fun and they serve us lunch.

Well enough for now I hope to see you all at the meeting Tuesday the 19th at 7:00 pm.  And remember we have some great door prizes and refreshments, so bring a friend and enjoy the evening with our guest speaker and all our fishing buddies. So for now keep you r line tight and your powder dry.
